Aura Lavallée
Aura Lavallée is a Red River Métis, with ancestral roots traditionally based in southern Manitoba. She has lived in both British Columbia and Manitoba, bringing a diverse and grounded perspective to her work.
The principles that guide her are humility in kinship to others, the land, and our ancestors.
Her approach to helping includes her focus on somatic therapy (body awareness) in connection to her cultural practices. Therapeutic approaches: Indigenous ways of knowing amongst her western therapeutic practice are influenced by: Somatic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Narrative Therapy.
The gift she carries is her Métis beading to address aspects of perfectionism, anxiety, and intergenerational knowledge.
Her experience working with Indigenous people has been based on her work in the downtown core(s) of Winnipeg and Victoria, where many are experiencing precarious housing, street entrenchment, long-term substance use and complex mental health and trauma. She utilizes values of harm reduction and recovery in an ever-flowing understanding of addictions. She also works with individuals who have experienced compounding grief, lateral violence, and a history of incarceration.
